OVERVIEW OF EQUESTRIAN NEIGHBORHOODS
Agoura – Old Agoura
Located between Agoura Hills and Calabasas, Old Agoura is a small family friendly community featuring a mix of spacious estates and Western style houses. Old Agoura is a magnet for equestrian enthusiasts, and a network of horse trails connects much of the area to the centrally located Old Agoura Park. There is an active 4H club and US Pony Club and residents can walk to trails and public equestrian arenas. Chesebro National Park is close by. The area is peaceful and surrounded by natural beauty and Malibu beaches are approximately a 10 minute drive. Old Agoura is located less than 30 minutes to Burbank (Bob Hope) Airport, 45 minutes to Los Angeles Airport and the closest freeway is the 101.
Bell Canyon
Home to many celebrities, Bell Canyon is a prestigious guard-gated community offering custom-built homes on minimum half-acre lots, miles of beautiful trials and a full-service equestrian center. Bell Canyon properties are less expensive than the neighboring community of Hidden Hills. Situated only minutes from Los Angeles, Bell Canyon is served by the Las Virgenes Unified School District and Las Virgenes DWP. Close to Calabasas and approx. 10 minutes’ drive from the 101 freeway.
Box Canyon
Brentwood/Sullivan Canyon
Located on the Westside, Brentwood is one of the most affluent neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Sullivan Canyon is an equestrian community with its own riding club supported by the residents. Surrounded by the Santa Monica mountains, Sullivan Canyon has a rustic quality and features beautiful custom-built homes. Close to the 405 freeway.
Burbank Rancho/Glendale
Perhaps the best known equestrian community in greater Los Angeles, Burbank is home to the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, adjacent to Griffith Park. Burbank Rancho is extremely horse friendly with plenty of boarding facilities and tack/feed stores close by. Because of the central location, the lots tend to be smaller and there are even condos with stalls available. This city is home to some of the major studios such as Warner, Disney, etc. Closest freeways are the 5 & 134 . The 101 is also nearby.
Chatsworth
Chatsworth remained mostly rural until the 1980s and has been the setting for many western movies and rural-themed TV shows. Despite the real estate boom of the early 2000s, Chatsworth has a small town feel to it and the more established neighborhoods retain a strong sense of community. Lot sizes are generous with homes varying from single story ranches to luxurious gated estates. Horse-friendly, particularly east of Topanga Canyon. Boarding facilities are plentiful and Chatsworth is bordered by the Santa Susana Mountains where the trails are wonderful. Properties in Chatsworth are within the Los Angeles Unified School District and Los Angeles DWP. Closest freeway is the 118.
Hidden Hills, Calabasas
The city of Hidden Hills is nestled between the western foothills of the San Fernando Valley in L A county and the Ventura county line. Located just off the 101 freeway, Hidden Hills is an exclusive gated community and possibly the most expensive equestrian community in the San Fernando Valley. Home to many CEOs and celebrities the beautiful custom-built homes are linked by bridle trails and the area has a rustic feel. Properties in Hidden Hills are within the Los Angeles Unified School District/Las Virgenes School District and also the Las Virgenes Water Department. About a half hour drive from the ocean.
Malibu
Melody Acres, Tarzana
Only three blocks long, this area features agricultural zoned properties and Melody Acres homeowners take pride in their rural piece of heaven. Homes are reasonably priced and are mostly single story ranches. Not much horse-keeping in the area as there are no bridle paths or trail access. Properties in Tarzana are within the Los Angeles Unified School District and Los Angeles DWP. Located close to the 101 freeway.
Santa Rosa Valley, Camarillo
Located approx. 25 minutes west of Woodland Hills, the Santa Rosa Valley in Ventura County offers a family friendly environment and a year-round mild climate. Santa Rosa Valley properties are on acre+ lots and there is a rustic feel to the area. Picturesque and horse friendly, trails abound and there is a public equestrian arena close by. Santa Rosa Valley can be accessed via the 101/118/23 freeways.
Shadow Hills
Located in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, Shadow Hills is primarily equestrian-zoned and is located within the city of Sunland. Shadow Hills properties vary between ranch homes and large gated estates. Very horse friendly and lots of boarding facilities and trails. Close to Burbank and the 210 freeway.
